What Are You Listening To?
The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; he knows those who take refuge in him. Nahum 1:7
As a pastor, I have the opportunity to meet with people who are going through some rough times. People struggle with relationships, hardships, illness, grief, and the list goes on. I, too, have struggled with such things, and at times it seems as though the weight can be unbearable. At times, we may feel small and insignificant, or even forgotten by others and by God. We wonder do others even know that we exist and what we may be experiencing? I want to offer some encouragement for us in times when we feel alone and small.
The Bible is such a great book, and if we look carefully enough, we discover some incredible truths about God and ourselves that help us combat the enemy’s whispers of lies in our ear. I have found that the volume of God’s voice in scripture overpowers the volume of the enemy when I choose to hear His voice over the lies of the enemy. And it is often in the whispers of scripture that God speaks the loudest.
Consider Nahum 1:7. Read this verse out loud for a moment and just meditate on it. Seriously, read it out loud a few times and think about it. It is such a quiet verse, but if you listen, it speaks volumes. Consider what God is saying here. The Creator of all things knows you. This is amazing news and should be an incredible encouragement for us that although it may seem as though others do not remember us, we are constantly on God’s heart and mind. And in our day of trouble, this is God’s invitation to run to Him because He is a place of safety and rest.
Here is a little more to consider. Jesus, the second person of the Godhead, came and bled, died, and rose again to atone for your sin so that you can have eternal life with Him. Our lostness was a greater obstacle than any worldly heartache we could ever experience, yet He dealt with it. If we trust God with overcoming our sin and giving us the gift of faith, why shouldn’t we trust God with the smaller things in life?
If you have put your faith in Christ for your salvation, that means you know He is good, and He knows you, and He is a refuge not only for eternity but for today. Even in the smaller things like our relationships, hardships, illness, grief, and sin that we tend to exaggerate. We just have to take refuge in Him. Who are you listening to today? What voice are you taking refuge in?
