Giving of Our Resources
"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." -2 Corinthians 9:7
This past Sunday, we took a big-picture look at the Bible's teaching on giving--before the Law, during the Old Covenant, and now, in the time of the New Covenant. My best shot at a moderate summary statement of how Christians are to relate to the tithe was as follows:
While the appearance of the tithe before and in the Law may rightly
guide our consciences to give at least 10% of our income to the
kingdom of God, we should not lay upon New Covenant Christians
the Old Covenant law of the tithe.
That statement requires some nuance, so if you didn't get a chance to listen to Sunday's message, you can find it here.
But don't take my word for it. Here are the articles I promised to pass along to help you consider this issue for yourself:
1. The Tithe: A Reformed Baptist Understanding
2. The Bible Commands Christians to Tithe
3. Seven Reasons Christians Are Not Required to Tithe
I'd love to meet up and talk about this topic sometime if that would be helpful.
