Mission: Justice, Kindness, Humility
Great question. If you’re like me, you often wrestle with wondering what you’re supposed to be doing with your life. Am I doing the right things? Am I doing enough?
I get jealous of the Apostle Paul sometimes. He had it pretty rough more often than not, but one thing God blessed him with was a promise. And God never breaks his promises. In Acts chapter 27, we learn that Paul was a prisoner on a ship heading to Rome. The unpredictable Mediterranean Sea was causing some major concern and worry for the 276 people aboard. It got so bad out on the water that the crew couldn’t even eat food for fourteen days! The crew even considered killing all the prisoners on board, including Paul, so that they would not escape in the event of a shipwreck.
But then God spoke to Paul and made him a promise.
God told Paul that he would make it to Rome because God wanted Paul to testify before Caesar himself. That promise must have allowed Paul to experience a peaceful calm when everyone else was freaking out. To have a mission from God. And his circumstances would not overwhelm him. Ahhhhhhhh.
The prophet Jeremiah had a rough life, too. And he knew it was going to be rough, because God told him, at a very young age, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5). Jerry was going to have a mission. He was going to prophesy to the nations. And he knew it. He had a purpose. The bad stuff that would come his way could not stop it. Because nothing stops a promise of God.
A verse I continually return to is Micah 6:8, because it tells me what I need to be, and what I need to be doing…
He has told you, O man, what is good;
and what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and walk humbly with your God?
Justice? Great, no problem. It’s awesome (when it’s not directed in my direction).
Love kindness. That takes work. And a lot of selflessness. See what I can do.
Walk humbly with God. Easy Peasy. Once I get over the whole pride thing, I’ll get right on that.
There’s my mission. And yours, too. Justice, Kindness, Humility. Thanks, God, for pointing us in the right direction. For putting us on mission for You.
