Read Some Books

Summer is in full swing. It gets dark at 9 pm and the sun is up at 5:30 am. Vacations are planned and executed. Schedules are different. You let the kids stay up a little later. You might eat more ice cream, and dinner may look a little different. It’s summer! It is supposed to be different.

While the changed, relaxed pace of summer sets in, I wanted to challenge you all to do something else a little different. Stop spending that extra time scrolling social media or binge-watching that new crime documentary. I challenge you to read a book that would encourage your soul and quite possibly encourage your family.

I remember my dad reading Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn to my sisters and me at the dinner table one summer. I also read The Screwtape Letters to our kids at dinner one summer, and surprisingly they loved it. So if you are inclined to take advantage of the summer to read something good for your soul, here are some suggestions from your elders.

The Screwtape Letters- C.S. Lewis
Desiring God- John Piper
The Meaning of Marriage- Tim Keller
Humility: The Joy of Self-Forgetfulness- Gavin Ortlund
Rejoice and Tremble- Michael Reeves

For a more challenging read, check out:
A Body of Divinity- Thomas Watson
Mere Christianity- C.S. Lewis
Essentials for Reformed Systematic Theology- Joel R. Beeke, Paul M. Smalley (Amy and I are reading through this one.)

Also check out the books at the resource table each Sunday. They are free and do no good if they are not taken. Now go and enjoy the summer!
