Keep Asking Why
Why is the moon out during the day?
Why do we need to sleep?
Why is the ocean salty?
Why can’t I do it myself?
Why do I have to eat vegetables?
Why can’t I have candy for breakfast?
Why do I have to take a bath?
Why can’t I see my eyes?
If you’ve spent any time with a toddler, you’ve likely been asked one of these or any other “why” questions. There are thousands of them and when they come off the tongue like rapid fire, it can feel overwhelming and annoying. But kids ask why for the same reason you do: to get information about something they don’t fully understand. The difference is they keep asking why and, as adults, we quickly move to the next question: what?
It’s easy to open the weekly newsletter and see what the church is doing: Bible studies, book studies, men’s and women’s events, youth events, and kids' ministry classes. I’d encourage you to pause and consider the why behind each of those.
At Calvary Severance, our primary why driving our ministry is to express love for God and ultimately to make joyful, passionate disciples of Jesus. (It’s literally our mission statement.) Jesus talked about His disciples experiencing life to the full, a life joined to God through a personal relationship with Him (John 10:10). If what we are doing isn’t Gospel-centered, Christ-centered, it’s worth taking time to dig deeper into the underlying purpose or motivation behind the what and take the necessary steps to modify it.
We gather for Bible studies and book studies because we need intimate community with one another. We serve inside and outside of the church to make Jesus non-ignorable. We disciple our children and youth because we care about their spiritual growth.
You get the idea. As you scroll through the many “whats” listed in the email this week, I pray you see the why behind them because when we know the why, we are more likely to get passionate about the what.
