Take a Moment to Look Around
And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
There is a John Piper quote that I think about often. It goes like this. “God is always doing 10,000 things in your life, and you may be aware of three of them. The reason I think about this quote often is I know I am unaware of the things God is doing, whether it be just ignorance or my pride consuming me in the things I think I am accomplishing. I want to know more of the things God is doing in my life. Sometimes we just need to stop and honestly take a look at what He is doing.
Yesterday (Monday) I spent some time in the mountains and I thought about all the amazing things God is doing. I thought about my kids and how I see God working in their lives. I thanked God for an amazing wife. I praised God for an amazing church that He allows me to be a part of. I considered how God has provided so much over the years for Calvary Severance, with a place to meet over five years and now a building. I thought about the work God is using our missionaries for and how we get to be a part of that. I thought about all of those that God has saved and we have witnessed their confession through baptism. I thought about Jaime and Gracie beginning their journey and how God will use them in church planting. I thanked God for our kids and student ministries, our Bible studies, and life groups where God has worked to draw people together and closer to Him. These are amazing things God is doing and I could go on but hopefully, you get the point. He is at work.
God is doing so much and it is a bit easier to see things such as those listed above but that is not the only way God is working in our lives. We may only see a fraction of what God is doing and often the part we don’t see may not make any sense. We need to know that even in times of trial God is working. God is working through our loss and grief (John 11). God is working through our struggles with sin (Romans 6:23). God is working in our times of doubt (James 1:6). God is working in our selfishness(Psalm 119:36). God is working in our times of pain (2 Corinthians 1:3-4). God is working in our loneliness (Deuteronomy 31:8). God is working in our times of worry (Philippians 4:6-7).
God is always working for His glory and the good of His people and I don’t think those two can be separated. We just need to stop and ponder just who God is. He is sovereign. Nothing catches Him by surprise and there is nothing more powerful than Him. He is even sovereign in our poor decisions.
He is infinitely loving. 1 John tells us that God IS Love, not that He simply loves but He is Love. If God has called you to Himself, then He has infinitely loved you. He has died for you. He has overcome sin and death for you. He will keep you in His loving arms. His love is so infinite it reaches into places we never knew could be reached and that is good for us.
I encourage you to take a few minutes and consider how God is working in your life. Embrace it more and praise Him along the way.
