Fix Your Eyes on Jesus
One of my favorite moments in toddler parenting is picking my son up from nursery. A couple of weeks ago, while at the Calvary family conference, I dropped my son (JT) off at the nursery while Jaime and I attended the main session. He was tearful and didn’t want me to put him down as I said goodbye, but that didn’t last long as he quickly got distracted by all the new toys and babysitters.
After the session, I went upstairs to get my son. I peered in at the door, watching him toddling around, a little truck in each hand. Something made him look up, and his eyes locked on mine. Immediately, he flung the toys to the ground and, with the biggest smile, came running to me, arms outstretched: “Mama!”
The joy and love in his face were unmistakable. The temporary pleasures that kept him distracted from my absence no longer held any value once he saw me and remembered who he belonged to.
It made me realize how easily I let myself get distracted by lesser pleasures when I take my eyes off of my Father. David fought this tendency by making sure to reflect on the Lord day and night. In Psalms 17:15 he says “As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with Your likeness.” When I study the Father's face, how quickly He puts my life into perspective! How quickly I remember who I belong to. I’ll end with a quote I heard in college that has stuck with me for years: “Fix your eyes on Jesus. It’s ok to stare.”
